The Pointed Pen Academy is proud to launch Copperplate from the Beginning, a comprehensive 12-month online workshop. This course introduces beginners to Copperplate calligraphy and provides a valuable refresher for those looking to refine their skills.

Copperplate calligraphy, with its graceful, flowing lines and delicate flourishes, is a revered art form that combines precision, creativity, and tradition. Learning it fosters patience, attention to detail, and a meditative focus.

Copperplate from the Beginning caters to both complete beginners and those wishing to revisit the basics. Over 12 months, students will learn about the best tools and materials, master basic strokes, and form both uppercase and lowercase letters. As they progress, they will compose short texts, creating cohesive and elegant pieces.

Instructor Cecilia Boschi, with a decade of experience, ensures personalized guidance and feedback. The course includes live online classes, Q&A sessions, individual feedback, and a lot of online resources to study historical exemplars. Students will also benefit from a supportive community on a private online platform.

Class Details

  • Cecilia will cater this course to a relatively small group of beginner and refresher students of Copperplate.

  • We are offering 25 spaces only on a FIRST-COME-FIRST-SERVED basis for this class to provide an intimate and comprehensive learning environment to enhance outcomes.

  • Over the span of 12 months, students will embark on a journey that will bring them in depth through the following topics:

    • understanding the essential tools and materials required for Copperplate calligraphy

    • the required posture

    • the terminology of calligraphy

    • an overview of the historical background that gave birth to Copperplate

    • mastering basic strokes

    • understanding the nib behaviour and how to improve the control of our tool

    • the structure of the lowercase alphabet letters and their connections

    • variations to the lowercase letters

    • the structure of the uppercase alphabet letters and how to space them properly

    • variations to the uppercase letters

    • compose short texts, bringing together all the elements you have learned into cohesive and elegant pieces

    • the basics of composition for effective cards and longer pieces

    • understand how to make choices about alignment, word spacing, size of writing related to various types of pieces for clients (private, corporate, weddings etc)

  • Classes are 2hr, Fridays, running from 9am - 11am Rome, Italy CET/CEST
    Catch ups are 1hr, Fridays, running from 9am - 10am Rome, Italy CET/CEST

We welcome 25 students to join this opportunity to take a deep dive into the study of Copperplate with Cecilia Boschi.

Suggested Materials

STRONGLY SUGGESTED TO START (you will have time to purchase more materials as class unfolds and after discussing with the teacher):

  • Oblique pen holder of your choice (there are many online calligraphy stores, search for the one nearest to you)

  • pointed pen nibs such as: Zebra G, Leonardt G, Gillott 303, Leonardt 41 Crown, Hunt 101

  • Walnut ink

  • Layout Paper (slightly see-through very smooth practice paper)

  • tiny containers, 2 (deep enough to dip the nib in)

  • water container for rinsing/cleaning nibs

  • cleaning tissue (lint free)

  • light weight see-through plastic ruler

  • pencil (HB or 2B)

  • soft eraser

The Teacher

Cecilia started her calligraphy journey in 2013 specifically developing her eye for pointed pen styles.

She has studied and continues to study with world renowned teachers such as Iampeth Master Penman Harvest Crittenden, Maria Helena Hoksch, Rachel Yallop, Heather Victoria Held, Christopher Haanes, John Stevens, Toni Watts, Yves Leterme, Barry Morenz, Iampeth Master Penman Michael Kecseg.

She has been a member of The International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH) for several years and was awarded the IAMPETH Certificate of Proficiency in Engrossers (part of the new Master Penman Program) in April 2018 .

Since 2019 she has explored new forgotten calligraphic styles such as Bastarda Italiana, which she teaches. In 2022 she was invited to do a demo at the online IAMPETH Virtual Conference of her Pointed Pen Roman Capitals.

She is the founder at CeciliaB Calligraphy offering her students classes and private lessons and her clients bespoken calligraphy.
