Current Kurrent Script
with STEFANIE WEIGELE
Class Description
In this workshop you will get to know ‘Current Kurrent’ – Stefanie Weigele’s personal, calligraphic pointed pen adaptation of Spitzfeder-Kurrent, a cursive script with Gothic roots. In preparing for our class, Stefanie has collected new material regarding Kurrent, including beautiful exemplars from Sweden, Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. Stefanie will make all the links accessible for students, to deepen your knowledge.
Hosted over four sessions, Stefanie will teach Kurrent lowercase and capital letters — distilling typical features from various exemplars and eras into her modern twist. Stefanie will cover hints on how to create your own Kurrent version by changing parameters like letter and stroke width, the ratio of x-height to ascenders and descenders, and line spacing. You’ll leave the course with historically accurate as well as more carefully crafted, readable, modern variations on many letters, allowing you to bring your own unique hand to the script in your practice and work.
You will receive handouts with some historical background and examples, basic stroke and alphabet exemplars, grid sheets and links to historical writing master books.
You should have a basic knowledge of pointed pen calligraphy to take this course and get the most out of it!
If you’re wondering what Kurrent script is, consider a time you came across old handwritten documents that seem familiar and yet strange, in which individual letters are readable but the majority of the text appears completely illegible? It was almost certainly some sort of Gothic Cursive. These handwriting styles were used mainly in Northern Europe from the late Middle Ages to Early Modern times. While they fell out of use in most countries with the rise of the Humanist scripts, in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and some Scandinavian countries they persisted much longer. In German, this script style is called ‘Kurrent‘.
